Who Should Install This Service Pack?

XenServer 6.5.0 Service Pack 1 (XS65ESP1) should be installed by all customers running XenServer 6.5.0. It includes all previously released XenServer 6.5 hotfixes. Installation of XS65ESP1 will be required for future functional hotfixes.

Citrix will continue to provide security updates to the base XenServer 6.5 product for a period of six months, from the release date of the XenServer 6.5 Service Pack 1 (until 12th November 2015). After this six month period elapses, any new hotfixes will only be released to support XenServer 6.5 with SP1 applied.

Important:

  • Back up your data before applying an update, just as you would with any other maintenance operations. For backup procedures, see the XenServer 6.5 Service Pack 1 Administrator's Guide.

  • Customers MUST upgrade each host in the pool to XenServer 6.5 BEFORE applying XenServer 6.5 Service Pack 1 to any hosts.

  • Update all hosts within a pool sequentially, always starting with the pool master. Failure to follow this sequence may result in pool members being unable to connect to the Pool Master until the Pool Master has been updated and rebooted.

  • Customers must ensure that the Pool Master is restarted before any of the pool members. This happens automatically for users applying the Service Pack using the Install Update wizard in XenCenter, unless they choose to perform the post-update tasks manually. Failure to follow this sequence may result in pool members being unable to connect to the Pool Master until the Pool Master has been updated and rebooted.

  • Customers who have installed device drivers should note that the driver disks issued for XenServer 6.5.0 are compatible with this Service Pack.

  • After applying the Service Pack, customers will be notified that the XenServer Tools are out of date. Customers should upgrade the XenServer Tools in each Windows VM. For more information, see the section Upgrading XenServer Tools in VMs later in this article.

Installing XenCenter for the Service Pack

Customers who wish to manage their hosts using XenCenter MUST install the compatible version of XenCenter. For more information, see Hotfix XS65ESP1001 - For XenServer 6.5.0 Service Pack 1.

Installing the Service Pack

Important: Customers must install this Service Pack to all hosts in the pool starting with the Pool Master. Failure to follow this sequence may result in pool members being unable to connect to the Pool Master until the Pool Master has been updated and rebooted.

Customers must disable High Availability (HA) before applying this Service Pack. As with any software update, it is recommended that you back up your data before applying this Service Pack.

Customers should use either XenCenter or the XenServer Command Line Interface (CLI) to install this update. Once the update has installed, the server must be restarted for it to take effect. Customers must update all hosts within a pool sequentially starting with the Pool Master. Upgrading of hosts should be scheduled to minimize the amount of time the pool runs in a 'mixed state' where some hosts have been upgraded and some have not. Running a mixed pool of updated and non-updated hosts for general operation is not supported.

Note: The attachment to this article is a zip file. It contains both the update package, and the source code for any modified open source components. The source code is not necessary for the Service Pack installation: it is provided to fulfil licensing obligations.

Installing the update using XenCenter

  1. Download the update to a known location on a computer that has XenCenter installed.

  2. In XenCenter, on the Tools menu, select Install Update. This displays the Install Update wizard.
  3. Click Next to start the wizard.
  4. Click Add to upload a new update.
  5. Browse to the location where you downloaded the Service Pack, select it, and then click Open.
  6. From the list of updates select XS65ESP1.xsupdate and then click Next.
  7. Select the hosts you wish to apply the Service Pack to, and then click Next.
  8. The Install Update wizard performs a number of update prechecks to verify that the update can be applied on the selected servers and displays the result. Follow the on-screen recommendations to resolve any update prechecks that have failed. If you want XenCenter to automatically resolve all failed prechecks, click Resolve All and click Next.
  9. Choose the Update Mode. Review the information displayed on the screen and select an appropriate mode and then click Install update.
  10. Note: If you click Cancel at this stage, the Install Update wizard reverts the changes and removes the update file from the host.

  11. Click Install update to proceed with the installation. The Install Update wizard shows the progress of the update, displaying the major operations that XenCenter performs while updating each host in the pool
  12. When the update has been applied, click Finish to close the wizard.
  13. If you chose to carry out the post-update tasks, do so now.

Installing the update using the xe Command Line Interface

  1. Download the update file to a known location.
  2. Extract the xsupdate file from the zip.
  3. Note: Ensure that you have at least 750MB of disk space on the dom0 filesystem of EACH host in the pool before uploading the xsupdate file. To check the available disk space on a XenServer host, log in as root and run the command df -h /. The Avail column for /dev/sda<n> displays the disk space available on the dom0 filesystem.

  4. Upload the xsupdate file to the Pool Master by entering the following commands:
(Where hostname is the Pool Master's IP address or DNS name.)
    xe patch-upload -s <hostname> -u root -pw <password> file-name= <path_to_update_file>XS65ESP1.xsupdate
XenServer assigns the update file a UUID which this command prints. Note the UUID.
    7f2e4a3a-4098-4a71-84ff-b0ba919723c7

  5. Apply the Service Pack to all hosts in the pool, specifying the UUID of the Service Pack:
    xe -s <hostname> -u root -pw <password> patch-pool-apply uuid=7f2e4a3a-4098-4a71-84ff-b0ba919723c7
  6. Verify that the update was applied by using the patch-list command.
    xe patch-list -s <hostname> -u root -pw <password> name-label=XS65ESP1
If the update has been successful, the hosts field will contain the UUIDs of the hosts this patch was successfully applied to. This should be a complete list of all hosts in the pool.
  7. To verify in XenCenter that the update has been applied correctly, select the Pool, and then click the General tab. This displays the Pool properties. In the Updates section, ensure that the update is listed as Fully Applied.
  8. The Service Pack is applied to all hosts in the pool, but it will not take effect until each host has been rebooted. Reboot the hosts sequentially, starting with the Pool Master. For each host, migrate the VMs that you wish to keep running, and shutdown the remaining VMs before rebooting the host.

Upgrading XenServer Tools in VMs

After applying this Service Pack to all hosts in the pool, customers should upgrade the XenServer Tools in each Windows VM using the following procedure. Customers using Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) should refer to PVS documentation for instructions on upgrading XenServer Tools. After upgrading the XenServer Tools, PVS customers should reboot their VMs before re-installing the target device software on the hard drive.

Important:

  • Installing XenServer Tools will cause any media in the VM's CD/DVD-drive to be ejected. Do not attempt to install XenServer Tools if the VM's virtual CD/DVD-drive is in use, for example, during OS install from CD.
  • Customers should upgrade the XenServer Tools before configuring the network settings on VMs.

To upgrade the XenServer Tools:

  1. Select the pool, and then click the Search tab.
Any running Windows VMs that display 'XenServer Tools not installed' should be upgraded.
  2. Click the XenServer Tools not installed link. This displays the Install XenServer Tools dialog.
  3. Click Install XenServer Tools on the message dialog to go to the VM console and begin the installation. This mounts the xs-tools.iso in the virtual CD/DVD.
  4. If Autoplay is enabled for the VM CD drive, installation will be started automatically after a few moments. If Autoplay is not enabled, double-click on the CD drive to begin installing XenServer Tools.
  5. Follow the on-screen installation instructions, and reboot the VM when prompted.
